Who, What, Where, And When At Art Basel

We’re at that time of year when the party winds blow south—to Art Basel Miami Beach. Two of the week’s busiest spots are starting things off tonight: At The Webster, the Brazilian footwear company Melissa is throwing a dinner in honor of Italian designer and architect Gaetano Pesce; meanwhile, at brand-spanking-new Soho Beach House, Jay Jopling’s big-time gallery, White Cube, will be tippling until 3 a.m.

This time around, erstwhile gallerist Jeffrey Deitch will be at Miami Basel as director of L.A.’s Museum of Contemporary Art. As usual, though, he’s hosting a big backyard party at the Raleigh (whose famous pool is pictured, above) on Wednesday, and this year he’s booked LCD Soundsystem. Other Wednesday night options include cocktails with The Last Magazine at The Webster and a party in a car park designed by Herzog & de Meuron—home of the new boutique The Alchemist, which has partnered with the art-world Web site Art Ruby for its inaugural Basel party.

But the real circus night is shaping up to be Thursday. Naturally, both Schnabel men are involved. Papa is doing a star-studded screening of his latest film, Mistral, in collaboration with Maybach and J/P HRO, Sean Penn’s Haiti charity; son Vito, meanwhile, is hosting a late-night bash at Wall with pals Stavros Niarchos and Alex Dellal. In between, there are fashion-heavy dinners for W and Interview magazines (at Cecconi’s and the Delano’s Solarium, respectively), not to mention one at The Webster hosted by La Mer and Estée Lauder. Across the bay, Bally is celebrating its pop-up shop and collaboration with Swiss artist Philippe Decrauzat. (While we’re on the subject, two other pop-ups to keep an eye on are the eyewear brand Illesteva’s, at Soho Beach House, and the OHWOW shop at the Standard Spa.)

Fashion and art types can’t get enough of Tilda Swinton, and Friday night’s top ticket has to be the dinner that Pringle of Scotland and London’s Serpentine Gallery have got her headlining at The Webster. Meanwhile, in Wynwood, the Rubell Family Collection is laying down the tablecloth for Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz. The best option for later on? Visionaire’s party at the W, with cocktails courtesy of Beluga, the vodka company that has also contributed 2,000 liters of product to a five-story descending “river” installation—no swimming allowed!

On Saturday, the Mondrian has dueling brunches: Estelle and Kehinde Wiley in one corner, Shepard Fairey and Paper magazine in the other. At the Standard, party doyenne Brooke Geahan and Playboy have organized a stripped-down evening, so to speak: an art salon featuring plenty of nude models and the likes of Vanessa Beecroft and Terence Koh. Afterward, the party will move to the Delano’s Florida Room, which is (once again) occupied for the week by Le Baron. It’s the craziest door in town—and possibly the one part of Miami where French is a more useful second language than Spanish.

Keep checking in with Style.com—we’ll be bringing the latest from Basel with daily party reports.

The Bachelorette: Ali Fedotowsky?s Christmas Wish List

She may not have worked out her wedding plans yet, but Ali Fedotowsky of ABC’s The Bachelorette definitely knows what she wants when it comes to Christmas gifts. What is she hoping to see under the tree from fiance Roberto Martinez? Read on for all the details!

Now that she’s checked “finding a husband” off her to-do list (though we’re still waiting on details regarding their wedding plans), Ali Fedotowsky is working on yet another list–for Christmas.

At Us Weekly’s Hot Hollywood: Stars Who Care party at The Colony in Hollywood on Thursday, Fedotowsky told the magazine about the couple’s plans for their first Christmas together, and more importantly, what gifts she’s hoping to get from Roberto.

“I don’t need both of these things, but I told him I want a yellow beach cruiser [bicycle],” revealed Ali. “And I know they’re a lot of money, but I want some Christian Louboutins really bad. A classic nude pair that I’ll wear all the time.”

At least she’s being practical.

But unless someone’s going to be helping Roberto out with his holiday shopping, Ali may have to either get the shoes herself, or at least show him a picture of them.

According to Martinez, “I don’t know what they look like.”

So he’s almost the perfect guy…

Alright Roberto, you’ve got about 27 shopping days to figure it out!

As for how the couple plans on spending their first Christmas holiday together, Ali says that they’re still trying to make their plans, telling Us Weekly, “Scheduling is difficult.”

4 Multi-Layer Looks to Keep You Warm All Winter

I don’t know about you, but of all the seasons, I love winter fashion the most. Winter is a fantastic time to express yourself with fashion as you can wear more of everything; be it hats, scarves, cardigans – you name it, there’s more of it. We’re talking prime layering time here – colors, patterns, silhouettes – the fun never stops!

That said, I’ll admit to being a little rusty when it comes to knowing what to wear when facing the elements. Which is why I’m writing this post. It’s an effort to remind myself how to stay stylish AND warm using multiple layers. Want to see the winter looks I came up with? Read on!

Hello Sunshine

(Products: Jacket, Cardigan, Scarf, Top, Shoes, Jeans)

Sometimes when I’m on campus in the winter, I feel like I’m stuck in a sea of drab, surrounded by plain black pea coats everywhere. I’m all for black trench coats – they’re a fall staple after all – but sometimes it’s just nice to see some color out there, you know?

As such, for my first outfit, I pulled a bright orange coat and paired it with yellows, reds and browns. I love the big yellow cardigan – it will keep you warm while still looking sunny. Additionally, I picked out a pretty floral tank top that keeps the look vintage-y and looks great with the adorable lace up booties I found. Throw this on and not only will you smile, but so will everyone who sees you!

Preppy and Proper

(Socks, Shirt, Shoes, Shorts, Jacket, Cardigan)

This look is for all you preps! If you love your oxford shirts and shoes, throw them on with a pair of cute gray shorts like the pair I picked out and then just pull on some knee socks. Next, all that’s left to add is a cozy cardigan like the one I chose (great for layering!) and a cute toggle coat. Then all you’ll need for your trek to the library is a warm cup o’ joe or hot chocolate to look sweet from head to toe.

Rebel Yell

(Jacket, Pants, Heels, Tank, Scarf)

All you rock n’ roll-ers will love this outfit as it keeps your edge sharp while your buns stay warm. To get this look, simply start off with a wild graphic tank like the one I chose above and just pair it with some of-the-moment cargo pants like this lovely green skinny pair. Then throw on some cool camel wedges, a scarf, and a deliciously gorgeous leather jacket. Wherever you’re off to in the cold, your look will slice through that winter chill and stick it to the man.

(Tights, Knitted Headband, Jacket, Dress, Boots, Cardigan)

I love dresses, but sometimes I forget that they’re multi-seasonal – in fact, they’re so easy to throw on, I don’t see why more people don’t wear them in the winter. Just throw on a cute day dress like this chambray one and throw on some black tights. Pair those tights with some cool boots like the cowboy ones I picked out, and then add a knitted headband t0 keep your noggin both warm and stylish. Finally, slip into a brightly colored cardigan-and-coat combo like the green ones above. Wear this look and you’ll turn frostbitten heads everywhere.

What do you guys think of the looks I put together? What are you going to be wearing this winter? What’s your favorite layerable staple? Whatever your thoughts, let me know in the comments!

It?s OFFICIAL! H&M is coming to Singapore in Autumn 2011

The wait is over, ladies & gentlemen. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the email from H&M in my Inbox. The store will be located in Orchard Building, Singapore, and will have a sales area of approximately 3,000 square metres. The store is planned to open during the autumn of 2011. That’s it… no more crazy thoughts of last-minute flights to Hong Kong or wherever! Can you say that our life is finally complete? It’s a pity that it won’t be in time for Lanvin for H&M.

“We look forward to opening our first store in South East Asia. There is great potential for expansion in this highly populated and fashion conscious region, and Orchard Road in Singapore is the perfect first step for this”, says Karl-Johan Persson, CEO at H&M.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Fashion Inspired by Hermione Granger

Last weekend, part one of the seventh and final installment of the Harry Potter series hit movie theaters everywhere. Fans lined up for hours to see the latest adventures of Harry Potter and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger brought to life on the big screen. Now that the trio have left Hogwarts in search of Voldemort’s horcruxes, they have shed their wizarding robes and are able to express their style more fully.

With her classic, sensible look, Hermione Granger (played by Emma Watson) proves that fighting evil while camping in the woods is no excuse for sacrificing style. In this post, I’ve compiled Hermione’s fashion from the movie into three looks so you can easily snag her style!

Outfit 1: Classic

The most important element of Hermione’s style is her choice of classic, tailored pieces with a preppy edge. She loves to layer T-shirts, cardigans, and button-downs for an interesting look that will also keep her warm in chilly England. For this outfit, start with a classic pair of pants and black flats and start layering! Then add simple accessories like a brown belt and simple bobby pins for your hair.

Product Information: Bobby Pins- Forever 21, Belt- Zappos, Trench- Forever 21, Tank- American Eagle, Sweater- Gap, Shirt- Old Navy, Pants- Forever 21, Flats- Forever 21.

Outfit 2: Camping

While watching the film, I loved how the characters’ outfits changed to correspond with the mood and colors of each scene. While the gang is camping in the woods, Hermione sports many chunky-knit fair isle sweaters and big, comfy scarves. She breaks up the shades of gray and blue in her outfit with rainbow-striped scarves and mittens.

For a similar look, start with an oversize sweater and add winter extras like a knit scarf, gloves, flannel shirt, and tough boots. Don’t forget the jewelry – I found this necklace that resembles the horcrux Hermione, Harry, and Ron have to take turns wearing.

Product Information: Scarf- Forever 21, Boots- Forever 21, Sweater- Forever 21, Jeans- American Eagle, Plaid Shirt- Forever 21, Necklace- Forever 21, Gloves- Forever 21.

Outfit 3: Cozy

The final element of Hermione’s style is the effortless way she throws items together. With a closet (or unending bag) full of basics, Hermione can easily mix and match pieces to create many different looks. Try pairing blue jeans with a tee, sweater, peacoat, beret, and converse for a go-anywhere outfit perfect for a fall day.

Product Information: Sneakers- Zappos, Coat- JC Penney, Sweater- Old Navy, Shirt- Old Navy, Jeans- Gap, Beret- Forever 21, Bracelet- Forever 21.

Hermione’s Beauty and Hair

Hermione has a naturally pretty makeup look and embraces the natural texture of her hair. And this makes sense because, let’s face it – this girl has way too much going on in her life to worry about applying mascara or curling her hair!

To look put together but still carefree, try a sheer foundation with a neutral eyeshadow. Add a bit of color with a tinted lipbalm, and play up the natural texture of your hair with a curl-sculpting cream. When that’s not enough to tame your locks, pull it all back into a messy bun or wavy ponytail with wispy layers framing your face.

Hermione even remembers to bring her perfume while camping (she almost gives their position away because of the scent), so try a light, fruity fragrance like Burberry Brit Sheer, made by the fashion house Emma Watson represented this past year.

Product Information: Perfume- Amazon, Lip Balm- Asos, Hair Gel- Drugstore.com, Eyeshadow- Sephora, Foundation- Benefit Cosmetics.

Bonus Outfit!: Couture

For Bill and Fleur’s wedding, Hermione abandons her wardrobe of neutrals and gets glammed up in a frilly red dress and heels. The actress herself is fearless when it comes to fashion – her chic new pixie cut looked fierce paired with a lacy, feathered dress at the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Get Hermione/Emma’s glam look by pairing a red dress with a lacy shawl and floral chiffon accessories, like these clips that can be placed in your hair or used to glam up a plain dress.

Product Information: Headband- Forever 21, Flower Clips- Forever 21, Heels- Heels.com, Dress- Nordstrom, Shawl- Miss Selfridge, Clutch- Asos.

What do you think?

Are you a Harry Potter fan? Did you see the new movie? What do you think of Hermione/Emma Watson’s fashion choices? Let me know in the comments!

Quiet Riot

Unis’ Eunice Lee isn’t one to shout. The Parsons-trained menswear designer—one of the few visible women steadfastly working in the men’s game—makes clothes that are understated and unbranded. “Even the fit is really quiet,” she’s said. So despite being carried by stores like Barneys, Bloomingdale’s, and Fred Segal, holding court in her own Elizabeth Street boutique, and counting the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal as admirers, she’s mostly flown under the radar.

The past year has seen that change somewhat, with her nomination for GQ’s Best New Menswear Designer award this year. But though Unis may be many things, “new” isn’t one of them. The label celebrated its tenth anniversary this year, and toasted the occasion with a rager at New York’s Dominion over the weekend. “It’s crazy how time flies—so hard to believe it’s already been ten years,” Lee said with a shrug. Prabal Gurung, Tim Hamilton, Humberto Leon, and half of the men’s editors and stylists in New York—many clad in Unis chinos—came out, as did a surprise guest: Mos (the artist formerly known as Mos Def, pictured, with Lee). The rapper-turned-actor is a longtime fan of the label and, Lee confides, a huge fan of those chinos. Fresh from a performance at Lincoln Center, where he’s starring in the John Guare play A Free Man of Color, he paused the raucous dancing with a serenade, “The Way You Look Tonight.”

The Apprentice: Details on Last Night?s Episode

Things are coming down to the wire on NBC’s The Apprentice! On last night’s episode, the remaining four contestants were challenged to write, direct, produce, and star in their own segments selling Isaac Mizrahi products on the QVC shopping channel. How did they do? Who got eliminated? We’ve got all the details!

After surviving last week’s boardroom elimination, Liza joins Brandy, Clint, and Steuart in the lobby. But before the final four contestants can relax, Donald Trump comes out to let them know that the teams will be shuffled up for the remainder of the competition–now it’s men vs. women (again).

The teams are then sent to Westchester, PA for a challenge that requires them to create and star in their own segments selling Isaac Mizrahi products on QVC.

At QVC, the teams negotiate to determine which Isaac Mizrahi products they’ll be selling and in what time slot. In an attempt to trick the women into giving them both the product and time slot they want, Clint, the project manager, offers to let the ladies have the first pick of the time slot if the men can have the first pick of the products.

Liza, also project manager, accepts, and chooses the earlier time slot, leaving the guys with the spot they wanted to begin with. After pretending that they wanted to sell the watches, the men instead choose to sell the purses, and Brandy realizes that she and Liza have been hustled.

The women work to develop a good price point for the watch. They settle on $69.95, realizing that they’ll have to sell 3 watches for every purse the men sell in order to win.

Clint and Steuart also have a hard time agreeing on a price for the purse, but end up settling on $194.97, after Clint insists that they stay under $200.

After deciding that Brandy will be the on-air presenter for their team since she identifies with the network’s key demographic, Liza starts to get overwhelmed with the project, and interrupts Brandy’s rehearsal to continuously have her move a sign that she feels is out of place.

During their five-minute segment, Lisa talks in Brandy’s ear through an invisible headset, giving her cues, but Brandy eventually stops listening to Liza’s confusing directions, and improvises instead.

At the end of their segment, Liza is worried about how things turned out, and realizes that it’s all up to the shoppers to actually decide to buy the watches.

Steuart and Clint, having had more time to prepare, just as they planned, begin their segment, with Steuart on camera selling the purses almost effortlessly.

After the challenge, Trump asks Isaac Mizrahi how he felt the two teams did. Though he agrees both on-air presenters performed very well, Isaac isn’t that happy with either of the team’s pricing, feeling that the ladies priced the watch too low, and the men set the purse at too high of a price.

In the boardroom, Trump asks Liza about her decision to put Brandy on air. When Liza explains that race was the determining factor, Trump agrees that while sad, it was probably the right thing to do business-wise.

Catherine Roman asks the men to divulge their negotiation strategy and Steuart happily explains how they outsmarted the women, but in the end, they know it all comes down to who sold the highest amount.

The women ended up selling 77 watches and making a profit of $2,998.38, with the men selling just 25 handbags and making  $2,174.25 in profit. The ladies start to congratulate one another, but the celebration is stopped short when Trump reveals that two people will be fired!

The ladies are sent to the lobby while Clint and Steuart are left to face The Donald and defend everything from their decisions during the challenge, to their educational backgrounds.

After some discussion, Trump decides that it’s Steuart that should be fired. But there’s still one more person that has to go, so the remaining three are called into the boardroom.

Who’s going to be fired next?

Tune in to the next episode of The Apprentice, which airs Dec. 2 on NBC.

American Idol: Glee Actress? Message to Idol Rejects

American Idol will be back in January with a lot of changes, but one thing that remains the same–there can only be one American Idol. So what happens to the thousands that don’t make the cut? Some of them actually go on to do other big things. In an interview with YRB magazine, Amber Riley of Fox’s hit show, “Glee” recalls her own American Idol experience, tells how it impacted her career, and gives some advice to other Idol hopefuls.

“With so many people in my family singing, it was kind of easy for me to go into clubs and sing background,” Amber told the magazine. “This was my first time out of my comfort zone auditioning. When I did that and they told me no, my world crumbled,” the 24-year-old actress recalls. “I was thinking these people are in the industry and they are telling me I’m not good enough to do this. I definitely thought that for a minute… It was a very humbling experience after being told how good I was the whole time.”

But after being rejected by the judges, Amber’s mother encouraged her to go on, telling her, “You know what you have and you know who you are and you know the gift you have. You just have to work harder.”

So, Riley quit her retail job in order to pursue her dream full time. And her gamble finally paid off when the she auditioned for and got the role of Mercedes Jones on Fox’s Emmy-award winning show “Glee.”

Without her Idol rejection, Amber says that she probably wouldn’t be enjoying the success that she has now.

“I am really glad they [" American Idol" ] told me no, because maybe if they hadn’t, I never would have strived for my full potential or reached my full potential. I might have rested on my laurels,” says Amber.

As for her tip to the many hopefuls who won’t end up becoming the next American Idol, Amber has a bit of advice:

“The best advice I can give is just be focused, be sure about what you want and don’t let anyone tell you no, you can’t do it. Don’t let that deter you.”

Season 10 of American Idol premieres Wednesday, January 19th on Fox.

British Fashion 101: Five British Style Icons to Watch

Many of you expressed your interest in British style in response to my last post on British vs. American fashion, so I thought I would do a piece on inspiration from some of my favorite British style icons. There were plenty to choose from, but today I want to focus on some slightly lesser-known women. After all, we already know how to dress like Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Emma Watson!

Today I have chosen to feature MTV Presenter Alexa Chung, TV presenters Fearne Cotton and Holly Willoughby, singer Florence Welch (of Florence + The Machine fame) and actress Carey Mulligan. Each of these women have fabulous day and night styles that are both unique and easy to recreate.

Below, I will be breaking down each of their styles and showing you both a day and a night outfit inspired by each girl.

Alexa Chung

TV  presenter Alexa is known for her fun, eclectic style. She mixes unusual pieces to create eclectic, not-quite-matching outfits that demonstrate her rejection of fashion rules.

Essential Elements of Alexa’s Style

Layering. Alexa definitely understands the temperamental nature of British weather and always keeps warm in an array of blazers, jackets and cardigans.

Stripes. Stripes are a fun and easy way to inject some flavor into your wardrobe, and Alexa uses them to create interest in a simple outfit.

Mixing girly with edgy. Alexa is best known for her laid-back festival-type look, but she also wows on the red carpet by mixing feminine dresses with edgy black booties. And she always loves to rock a laid-back jacket with her cutesy florals.

Leave something to the imagination. Alexa pulls off ultra-short dresses by keeping the rest of her body covered. She admits she doesn’t have any cleavage, so she keeps it sexy but not trashy by putting her top half under wraps and just showing off those endless legs.

Outfit Inspired by Alexa- Daytime

I wanted to create an outfit that represented Alexa’s laid-back but put-together daytime look. While Alexa loves her high-waisted shorts and simple striped tops, she often mixes them with fun accessories to keep things from looking too perfect.

bag/striped top/blazer/high waisted shorts/oxfords

This outfit is great because it is so easy to recreate with pieces you already own, namely the striped top, denim shorts and oversized blazer. I added the oxfords to give the outfit a fun, masculine twist. Finally, what Alexa Chung outfit would be complete without the Mulberry “Alexa” bag? This bargain version is almost identical – for less than $12!

Outfit Inspired by Alexa – Night

I absolutely love Alexa’s nighttime look, and one of my favorite outfits of hers is the one in the second picture above, where she’s rocking an amazing lacy dress. I love how she creates a romantic yet edgy look with the little booties and clutch.

I got SO excited when I found this dress – but then I realized, it is super-short! So I added tights to wear underneath, but leggings would also look great with it, if you need more coverage. Alexa likes to keep her jewelry simple, but I thought this layered cross necklace worked well with the vintage Victorian look of the dress.

Fearne Cotton

Ex-kids TV presenter and radio DJ Fearne Cotton has a style all her own. Fresh, fun and edgy, there is nobody who dresses quite like her. She rocks Converse and bands t-shirts for day, but always looks amazing in mini-dresses and heels for red-carpet events.

Essential Elements of Fearne’s Style

Fun shoes. Shoes are always a conscious choice for Fearne. Whether she’s rocking biker boots with a girly dress or comfy Converse with a pretty skirt, her feet always make a statement.

Mixing prints. Fearne loves to mix different prints and patterns – like in her first outfit above. Need some help making the look work? We’ve got some tips on how to mix prints.

Mixing styles. I love that Fearne will often mix a pretty floral skirt with an edgy band tee, making her look feminine but also totally rocker-chic.

Finish with an amazing bag. We can’t all afford Mulberry like Fearne, but we can channel her handbag style! She’s known to rock brightly colored handbags, so try a red bag against a dark-toned outfit.

Outfit Inspired by Fearne – Daytime

I absolutely love how Fearne mixed prints in the first outfit above, finishing her look off with laid-back Converse. The ensemble is so chic but also looks very comfortable. Therefore, I decided to recreate something similar on a college budget.

black tank top/plaid shirt/skirt/converse/bag

Like Alexa’s day look, Fearne’s daytime style is easy to recreate with the clothes you already own. Leopard print is a huge trend this season, and when paired with a plaid shirt, the otherwise-dressy leopard skirt becomes casual and funky. Finally, Converse are a great alternative to ballet flats for a fun daytime look, but you could also add heels to make this outfit work for evening.

Outfit Inspired by Fearne – Night

Fearne’s evening look is really easy to recreate – all you need is a great dress and a cute pair of shoes!

dress/biker boots/clutch/bracelet

I love how Fearne pairs her ultra-feminine dress with punky biker boots in the last picture above, and I also love the bright purple dress she wears in the second picture. So put ‘em together and what have you got? This ensemble! This dress is a fabulous investment piece – it’s simple enough for daytime as well as evening, and it would also be fab with boots and tights for the cold winter months.

Holly Willoughby

Fearne’s best friend, TV presenter Holly Willoughby, is just as stylish, but has a different approach to fashion. While Fearne is a rock chick, Holly is a glam icon for curvy girls everywhere – embracing fitted dresses and showing off her assets with nipped-in waists. Her style is much more feminine and sophisticated than Fearne’s, but works great for both day and night, too.

Essential Elements of Holly’s style

Ultra-girly. Holly’s look is really feminine – think floaty tea dresses and fitted evening gowns. She even gives her denim look a sophisticated edge with a cute patterned scarf and heels.

Rock those curves! Holly has curves in all the right places and boy, does she know how to show them off! To get her look, choose form-fitting dresses and plunging necklines, but choose longer lengths to avoid looking trashy.

Black opaques keep it classy. As Holly knows, when it comes to showing skin, sometimes less is more. She’s known to rock black opaque tights with her little dresses, making for a sexy look that’s also classy.

Perfectly polished. Holly’s look is always perfected – there is never a hair out of place or a smudge of eyeliner to be found. She’s also a fan of keeping things simple. On the red carpet, she lets her dresses do the talking, keeping jewelry to a minimum.

Holly’s daytime look is really easy to recreate with a cute tea dress and a fabulous belt to define those curves.

I love this dress because it’s a perfect layering piece for winter (just add a long-sleeved tee underneath, or rock a cardigan on top), and the belt will help define its already-cinched-in waist. Belt the cardigan on top for an on-trend look. Finish off with a mix of tan and black accessories, including a vintage bag that Holly would love.

Holly’s evening look is glamorous and sexy, so I wanted to create something simple and elegant, like the outfit she is wearing in the second picture above.

This look would be perfect for a Holiday party or New Year’s Eve event. The bright red dress will ensure you stand out, and it needs minimal accessories – just add a simple necklace, leopard pumps, and a basic clutch, and you’re good to go!

Florence Welch

Florence Welch has two very different style personas – during the day, she rocks an indie-inspired, eccentric look, while on stage, she’s all about Greek goddess-style flowing gowns. We’ve already done a post here on CF inspired by her music, so this post is dedicated to her unique look, on and off stage.

Essential Elements of Florence’s style

Masculine-inspired pieces. Florence is often seen in oxfords and oversized blazers, both of which give her girly look a masculine edge.

Don’t be afraid to go long. Florence often wears long dresses on stage and they look fabulous on her. Maxi dresses were huge this summer, so continue the trend with a long evening dress or skirt.

Mix vintage and new. Florence’s style is fun because she mixes her vintage pieces with modern items, creating a balanced yet eclectic aesthetic.

Play with a neutral palette for daytime. While Florence loves to wear bright colors on stage, during the day, she works muted tones of blue and mustard, as well as lots of black.

Outfit Inspired by Florence- Daytime

I wanted to create a daytime outfit that incorporated all of Florence’s trademarks – high-waisted shorts, blouses, blazers, ankle socks and, of course, a great bowler hat.

This is probably my favorite outfit of this post. I love the look of tight-fitting shorts with a loose blouse, and I love the masculine shoes, blazer and satchel bag. Next, I added the ankle socks, hat and red lipstick for a fun, Florence-esque touch. As Florence proves, redheads absolutely can wear red lipstick!

With her flaming red curls and classic features, Florence looks like a Greek goddess on stage. Therefore, I wanted to find a beautiful Grecian dress and a touch of sparkle to recreate her red carpet and on-stage look.

I debated including this dress because it’s not exactly budget-friendly, but it was so beautiful and such a perfect example of what I had in mind for Florence’s night dress that I had to use it. Obviously, there are dozens of other Grecian-inspired dresses out there that would be more budget-friendly. Next, I added a bit of sparkle (Florence loves her glitter!) and Florence’s trademark silk socks and heels. Since the dress is such a statement-making piece, this simple gold cuff is all that’s needed to complete the look.

Inspired by Carey Mulligan

Actress Carey Mulligan was recently voted Best Dressed Woman of 2010 and it’s easy to see why. While her daytime look is laid back and casual, her evening look is positively showstopping.

Essential Elements of Carey’s Style

Relaxed, easy pieces for day. Carey loves black cropped trousers, and as you can see in the photo above, they look fabulous when paired with a loose, simple shirt.

Choose feminine pieces for evening. Carey’s red carpet dresses are always pretty and feminine without being too sexy. She usually chooses classic shapes and adds minimal jewelry.

Minimalism. Carey’s style is intentionally effortless – this girl doesn’t like tons of flash. Even her red carpet looks are simple and classic.

Outfit Inspired by Carey – Daytime

To create a look inspired by Carey, my goal was to keep it simple. After all, Carey’s daytime style is all about being comfortable yet classy.

shirt/blazer/cropped trousers/pumps

I love this outfit because it is at once both laid-back and smart. Cropped trousers are a great alternative to jeans, and a smart blazer and shirt make this look work-appropriate, yet still comfortable and effortless.

I wanted to create an outfit based on Carey’s gorgeous 2010 Oscar dress (pictured above). In case you don’t remember, her beautiful dress was decorated with little knives and forks! As Carey’s Oscar look proved, one statement dress is really all you need to stand out – accessories can be kept to a minimum when your frock is amazing.

To begin, I chose a pretty black party dress with a similar shape to Carey’s Oscar gown. I absolutely loved Carey’s ribbon shoes, and these are a fabulous alternative. Finally, since the dress has an unusual neckline, you don’t need to wear a necklace, so these beautiful chandelier earrings complete the look.
