The Downfall Using The Color Pink in Branding, PR and Marketing
Pink happens to be my favorite color and has been since my first Strawberry Shortcake doll. Pierce Mattie himself on the other hand finds it at times a little offensive. To me, it represents femininity and beauty. Others may now associate it with breast cancer initiatives while some now even associate it with the sexualization of young girls. In Peggy Orenstein's book, Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture, she discusses how from an early age girls are marketed to in a way that tells them “how a girl looks matters more than who she is.” Some would argue this is true, especially those on the cusp of Gen X and Gen Y.
In recent years I've heard more people opposed to giving their daughters a Barbie because they feel she represents something unattainable rather than simply being a doll. (As a child this never even crossed my mind, I loved Barbie simply because she was cool.) In college I remember a Sociology class I took that focused on women and how the media depicts how our roles should be in society; the professor called it the “Upstairs Downstairs effect.” One of the things we had to study were Disney films and list the commonalities among the princesses or lead females in each animated movie. The female, she argued, was relaying to girls at an early age that this is what society expects of them–be physically attractive, be flirty, seek perfection and know your role in a relationship. I definitely saw the pattern, which is what Cinderella Ate My Daughter is trying to point out; not merely Disney princesses, but how this is seeded through all aspects of childhood by the media and toy makers.
And if you think about it for a minute, how else do we tell child stars to make a successful transition from bubble gum to adult? They're told to sex it up. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus anyone? Our tabloids blast any star who shows even an ounce of cellulite. And who lands on the covers of magazine with positive PR spin? Only the super attractive. What does that tell our daughters?
You could say that Orenstein's book portrays pink washing as not only deceptive marketing when it comes to breast cancer, but gives it new meaning as the downfall of sexualization in our children. Have you read this book? What do you think?

Style Icons of 2010 ? No 7: Dannii Minogue
So what was number 7 on our list of the most requested celebrity styles for 2010?….Number 7 on the count down is new mum and glamorous X Factor judge with an aussie accent, guessed who yet, that’s right its none other than fashion icon Dannii Minogue with her versatile mid length brunette bob with golden highlights.
How to get Dannii’s look
Dannii Minogue was a great ambassador this year for showing the UK viewing public how versatile a simple bob can be.
1. Ask for a blunt bob with graduation at the back, to completely follow Dannii’s example add golden and caramel highlights.
2. Short hair is great for playing with, on XFactor this year Dannii has used quiffs, crimps, updos, curls and many other hair styling techniques to create unique looks to go with her fantastic outfits.
3. Dannii’s look is all about healthy hair with volume, most of her looks can be created with a GHD IV Styler, but it is essential to get a heat protection spray like Tigi Fashionista Smooth & Shine to protect your hair from the constant use of hot styling tools.
4. For a great finish to all your new experimental styles use Tigi Bed Head Headrush Shine Spray that gives explosive shine and extreme gloss and depth to your new highlights.
If you want to copy Dannii’s look or need some help creating it at home, come to the salon or book a FREE consultation online…

Blake Lively is the New Face of Chanel?s Mademoiselle
It all started with a friendly introduction by Anna Wintour last July during Couture Fashion Week. Karl Lagerfeld has since set his eyes on Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively (also a Vogue US favourite!). Lively gushed over her first meeting with Kaiser, “How did Cinderella feel when she slipped on the glass slipper? How did Snow White feel when she met her Prince Charming? A dream come true is an understatement. I can say that I feel like the happiest, luckiest girl around.”. Her “Cinderella” moment doesn’t end. She is the newly appointed Chanel ambassadress for the Mademoiselle handbag collection. I can’t wait to see the campaign in March since it will be photographed by the Kaiser himself.
Top 10 hairstyles of all time ? No 8: Extensions
Number 8 on the count down of the top 10 hairstyles of all time are Extensions.
Ok this is not exactly a hairstyle, but since the invention of Extensions means that we can go from short hair to long hair in an instant it is definately worth a mention in this countdown. Since ancient Egypt women have been having fun with hair pieces and now in the new millenium its not only the rich and famous that can afford to change their style using extensions.
Permanent hair extensions are now available at a few hundred pounds, depending on the brand and the method of attaching them. If it is just for the night fake hair pieces in a range of colours and sizes are available at most costume jewellery shops or salons.

Beauty by the Decade: The 1960s
Editor’s Note: Our newest series, “Beauty by the Decade“, explores beauty trends from the past and transfers them into wearable, updated ideas for hair and makeup. In case you missed last week’s edition, see: Beauty by the Decade: The 1950s. Also, be sure to check out’Beauty by the Decade: The 1920s, as well as’Beauty by the Decade: The 1970s.

The 1960s marked a transition between the ladylike looks of the ’50s and the free-spirited glamor of the ’70s. The Mod subculture was at its peak during the early and mid ’60s, which brought about a more playful approach to makeup and the use of color. Voluminous hair, lots of eyeliner, and the pixie cut also made their way into mainstream style during this decade. Below, I’ll break down the most popular makeup and hair looks of the 1960s and show you how to adapt them to your everyday style.
1960s Makeup

The 1960s were all about dramatic eyes and paler lips. Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick were known to sport this look.
For a full video tutorial showing you how to do a whole face of Mod makeup, see our guide to Achieving the ’60s Mod Makeup Look. Below, I’ve detailed the basics of the mod makeup look again but be sure to check out the linked post above for the video guidance!
To get Twiggy and Edie’s ’60s Mod eyes, you’ll need:
Product Information: White Eyeliner-NARS, Black Liquid Eyeliner-MAC, Matte White Eyeshadow-NARS, False Eyelashes-Sephora, Nude Lipstick-MAC, Brow Pencil-Lorlac, Black Eyeliner Pencil-Benefit Cosmetics.
After applying foundation and concealer to your face for a base, apply a matte white eyeshadow across your eyelids.Apply a white eyeliner to your bottom waterline of your eyes. This makes your eyes appear brighter and bigger.Outline your top eyelid with a black liquid eyeliner, drawing a thin line along your eyelashes.Using the black liquid eyeliner, draw a half moon shape in the crease of your eyes above the white eyeshadow.Use a black eyeliner pencil to line your bottom lid next to the white waterline.Using the liquid eyeliner, “draw” a few extending bottom lashes. Be sure not to go too crazy with how long the lines are – keep them shorter. After curling and applying mascara to your lashes, apply your fake eyelashes to your top lid. Add a few more sweeps of mascara to make the lashes blend in.Use a brow pencil to define your eyebrows.Apply a nude lipstick to finish off the look.Updated 1960s Makeup
Instead of going full-fledged Edie or Twiggy, get an updated ’60s mod look by playing around with eyeliner. Defining your lower lashes or applying dramatic, winged eyeliner (a la Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra) are great ways to pull of mod makeup without looking costume-y.
1960s Hair
The ’60s held some major changes for hairstyles. At the beginning of the decade, beehives, bouffants, and styles reminiscent of the ’50s were the dominant styles. (Think the movie Hairspray!) Towards the middle of the decade, the slick pixie cut (thanks to Twiggy and Mia Farrow) was popular. As the ’60s moved into the ’70s, the long, sleek hair seen on Marsha Brady on “The Brady Bunch” (1969) began to emerge as the sought-after style.
Updated ’60s Hair
Channeling the 1960s today is easier than ever, thanks to the fact that ’60s styles are back in fashion. Pixie cuts have recently made a comeback (with fans like Emma Watson, Carey Mulligan, and Michelle Williams) and big volume is always in.
“Flippy” hair is also an easy and adorable way to add some ’60s flair to your do. To get this look, take a curling iron (or even a flat iron) and after placing it about 2-3 inches from the ends of a 1-2 inch section of hair, gently curl the hair outwards. After spraying a little hair spray for staying power, you can work the flip with your fingers to make the style a little looser. The flip is adorable with a ponytail (like Drew Barrymore pictures above) or even just with your hair down.
Another simple way to do a ’60s hairstyle is to use ribbon as a hair accessory. Side-swept bangs, flipped out ends, and ribbon used as a headband will help you emulate the decade in a subtle way.
Your Thoughts?
Would you rock ’60s hair and makeup? Which styles do you love most? Would you ever wear the mod style eye makeup? Leave a comment and let us know!

?Preppy With A Wink? At Richard Chai For Original Penguin
There seems to be a new high-low collaboration announcement every week, but while most designers go the way of capsule collections for mass fashion retailers, Richard Chai for Original Penguin has morphed into a longer relationship. After a set of ten pieces for Spring 2011 that was incorporated into Chai’s eponymous men’s runway, the pairing was back for Fall 2011 with a full collection. “Penguin is an iconic brand and it has this all-American, preppy-with-a-wink look to it,” Chai explained at the collection’s presentation at the Hotel Griffou late last week. “I wanted to work with that image, but also make it edgier.” Penguin’s creative director Ann Payne who worked with Chai on the designs chimed in: “There’s an undercurrent of speakeasies and private men’s clubs.”
The design marriage resulted in something between collegiate and grunge insider. Plaid was the pattern of choice in button-down shirts styled under classic crew neck sweaters and tied around the waist, while trousers were more tailored-in than your usual contemporary fare. Outerwear was the strong suit including a black wool melton number with toggle buttons and a wool herringbone double-breasted coat standing out. A recurring theme was texture play—popcorn knit beanies, corduroy accents, and chunky shawl collar cardigans—that mostly worked. A sole exception was one button-down shirt that was distracting with its leather collar, cotton body and wool herringbone accents.
Overall, the fashion-minded updates were nicely executed and subtle, which in the end is what the continuing collaboration is all about. “It’s a challenge to design great pieces that are accessible and a greater population can wear,” Chai said. “In my usual design world, being approachable is sometimes looked down upon. But at the end of the day, the ultimate compliment is spotting somebody wearing something you designed on the street.”
